Winery Info
Our new tasting room has been (somewhat) finished.  The head elf has always said 90% complete is when you move on to the next pressing project and back to finishing the project when you have time.  Of course there never seems to be enough time. Anyway, we will have our grand opening Saturday and Sunday the 4th and 5th of September, 2010.  Music, food, wine, cider - does it get any better than this.  Saturday will feature pigs and vino which translates to a pig roast. Sunday is dogs and cider. We will have free hot dogs, and cider samples
.
Fruit Tree Planting
The Elfs had a busy early spring.  Last fall they had started clearing the north side of the vineyard.  Several trees and numerous bushes were removed.  The ground was dug and cultivated to remove the bedrock and fieldstone. Field drain was installed and the field was leveled, raked and further prepared.  Cherry trees and plum trees were planted the second week of April, 2010.  These fruit trees will increase our ability to make fruit wines as well as flavored ciders.  It takes two to three years to realize fruit from these trees.  The orchard and vineyard (as of this writing) are still pretty well bare and rough looking.  PLEASE EXCUSE OUR APPEARANCE DURING THIS TIME.

New Grape Planting
The head elf had decided to plant a new variety of cold hardy grapes. In the fall he ordered three hundred Marquette vines as a trial.  This fairly new Minnesota grape has a Pinot Noir ancestry has made some award winning wines in it's short existence.  The vines were ordered as potted plants instead of bare root to allow for a later planting.  The head elf had applied for a USDA grant to install a high tunnel to study grape growing under cover.  Not sure of the grant he wanted to put off planting time (June instead of May) as long as possible.  On Friday, April 23 the head elf received a call from Anne Marie from the local NRSDS office and was notified that ELFS farm had received the grant.  The grant requires that Elfs Farm provide four years of data and plant the same crop inside the tunnel as outside.  We will keep you posted of the study data.

The Hi - Tunnel should begin to be erected sometime in late August.  It is due to be shipped the first week of August and received by the elfs a few days later.
